Napínavý příběh z viktoriánské AnglieANGLICKÝ ROMANOPISEC WILKIE COLLINS bývá literárními kritiky označován spolu s E. A. Poem a Emilem Gaboriauem za zakladatele žánru detektivního románu. Jeho nejznámější román Měsíční kámen prohlásil básník T. S. Eliot za nejlepší detektivku všech dob. A v tom názoru ho podpořili i jiní. Jisté je, že Collins sám ani netušil, že nějaké detektivky píše. Ve své době patřil k vyhledávaným a velmi populárním autorům tzv. senzačního románu vyrůstajícího z tradic realismu a okořeněného výběrem kriminálních událostí ze současnosti a nevázanou společenskou kritikou.Román Žena v bílém předcházel Měsíčnímu kameni a žánrově patří spíše k příběhům s tajemstvím, než by byl plnokrevnou detektivkou. Přesto detektivní zápletku nepostrádá. Mimo ní tu najdeme prvky romantické a hororové.Složitý děj nás zavádí do viktoriánské Anglie. V roce 1978 zkušená rozhlasová scenáristka Helena Šoltészová román zdramatizovala pro rozhlas.
