Když ne já pro sebe, kdo tady bude pro mne? A když ne takto, jak? A když ne nyní, kdy? ptá se píseň, kterou přijala za svou hymnu Gedaljova partyzánská skupina složená z ruských a polských Židů, mužů a žen odhodlaně bojujících proti nepříteli. Jsou to lidé, kterým válka vzala všechno – jejich rodiny, domovy, svobodu. Vydali se na dlouhou pouť z běloruských lesů a bažin směrem na západ.
