Česká čtenářská obec neměla k dispozici srozumitelný a čtivý překlad této velké básně. Kdysi průkopnický překlad Jungmannův i pozdější překlad Josefa Julia Davida jsou pro současného čtenáře těžko čitelné. Hlavním smyslem této knihy je tuto překážku odstranit a nabídnout čtenářům Miltonovu báseň v současné češtině jako velký, napínavý a dramatický příběh, který se týká kořenů naší civilizace.

Z angličtiny přeložil a úvodní studii napsal profesor Martin Hilský.
